Roger A. Greenwell

Roger A. Greenwell, Ph.D.
Our Roger passed away on February 20, 2010. He was born December 4, 1941, in Santa Maria, Ca. He was the sixth and last child born to Bessie Florence and George C. Greenwell. After completing high school and two years of college in Santa Maria, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and attended The Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California to learn Vietnamese. He served in Vietnam as an interpreter for Army Intelligence. While in the military, he was the recipient of many awards, including the Bronze Star. After discharge, he was employed by the U.S. government as an interpreter and returned to Vietnam.
Roger went on to earn a Bachelor's of Science degree in mathematics from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and later a Master's Degree and Doctorate in Business Administration from USIU, San Diego. Although he lived in San Diego for the last forty years, he traveled extensively while doing research for both the Government and the private sector. He was internationally recognized for his expertise in fiber optic research.
Roger is survived by his wife of forty years, Jeannine ("Nonie") and their treasured son, George, as well as by many other loving relatives. He enjoyed traveling, reading, golfing, and savoring fine food, wine and friendships. He was a lifetime student of different cultures and religions. He respected and embraced diversity and advocated for human rights and equality. His loved ones will miss his persistent optimism, rock solid support and unwavering loyalty. He was happiest when he was with his family and with Roger, friends often became family. His proudest moments came when he celebrated the accomplishments of his son, nieces, nephews and godchildren or when he attended one of their many sporting events or performances. His family wishes to thank all those who supported Roger thoughout his long struggle with cancer. While his body finally conceded, his spirit never did-- the battle was not lost.
Memorial service details are available on the El Camino Memorial - La Mesa Chapel website or by contacting family members. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite charity. Roger's favorites were those benefiting children.
